I used a new app today. Yes, because kd lang did a promo for it. it is called Stop, Breathe & Think. It asks you to assess yourself and recommends different meditations based on your self evaluation. I liked the recorded voice, too!
Yesterday marks a year since my first deep brain stimulator was implanted. it is also one of the few times I have cooked supper this year. Best of all, it is 5:30 am and I just woke up! The surgeries let me sleep but mostly in four hour bursts. This is the longest I have slept since DBS.
Yesterday was a long way from normal, but it was a lot closer than I have been in a long long time.
Here Is a link to one woman's practice of gratitude.
Yesterday I went to physical therapy. One thing we did was so amazing to me that I feel like I need to share it even though midst people probably know it intuitively.
My therapist said, "I wantt You to do some squats." I began steeling myself because squats make my knee hurt. Only these did not hurt. Here's what we did:
For the longest time, I have not say down with decorum. I have plopped or dropped or nearly fallen but I have not sat.
I stood at the end of a bed-height table with my feet a shoulder's width apart.
I began to sit.
When my butt landed on the table. I stood up. Simple enough?
EXCEPT my therapist did not want me to sit so far back that I pushed off with my thighs. And he did not want my feet to lift off the floor.
SIDE NOTE: Parkinson's disease makes you think about every movement that you do. Anything that was automatic has to be learned from scratch. That is why I had a sitting lesson.
What to do?
Did you know that you have to use your torso to sit and stand It is not just a function of legs and hips (hardly anything is).
Adjust your Center of Mass by pointing the front of your torso at the space between your feet, before you sit and before you rise.
So. Stand. Bend forward at the hips. Lower hips. sit. Sit up straight. Bend the torso forward. Lift hips. Straighten legs. Lift from hips. Straighten torso.
Simple. Well it is for some. For me, the best result was it did not hurt my knee. Good thing because I neeed tto practice this one.
